Shadow walked through Jump City, not knowing where he is or where he's going. This place is a hell of a lot different than New York City he thinks to himself. This city was completely different, with both new heroes and new, more complicated, villains. He couldn't believe he was going from Mafia hitman to Teen Titan, what a shift.
He continued walking down the street, near what he assumed to be the center of the city. Finally, seeing Titan Tower, he began walking in that direction. But as usual he eventually got lost. He just kept on walking. Eventually, seeing a cafe, he walks inside for some rest and sits at a random table next to some girl with pink hair...

Mmm, hot chocolate. It was one of Jinx's favorite drinks, probably because she'd never liked coffee. And that probably would never change. Coffee had negative connotations for the girl--it was the drink of choice for her mother, who would nurse a hangover by ignoring her daughter completely, focusing on the hot brown liquid like it was worth more than her own flesh and blood. Fuck that, Jinx thought angrily, shaking her head over the styrofoam cup she held between her hands. Thinking about dear ol' mum never did any good for her moods--it was better to just leave it be. So she did, zoning out in an alternation between staring out the window at the darkening street outside or watching the patrons around her. Oh gosh, people could be so funny. So stupid. So predictable. They were like a particularly interesting, if not a bit annoying, science project Jinx liked to survey when she had nothing else to do. Which, she currently didn't. Hell, she'd probably even be a good kid and pay for her drink. No fun for Jinxy...No fun at all.. A grimace flitted over her pink lips before she allowed herself another sip.
Jinx was brought sharply back to reality as something moved in her immediate peripheral vision. Someone was sliding into the booth next to her. All her muscles tensed, as a reflex of not only living on the streets but also being one who often had people after her (to arrest her, usually). The one interrupting her private party of one, Jinx saw, was a shaggy-haired boy, probably a year or so older than her, in a trenchcoat. Jinx's eyebrows rocketed skyward in confusion and disbelief, like "is this kid serious!?" The boy did not say anything, offered nothing in the way of conversation or explanation. So that left it up to Jinx. She hoped he wasn't looking for anything eloquent or polite--tact had never been her thing. "Uh, can I help you with something?" Her tone implied that had she been standing, she would have put her hands on her hips, but all she could do now was set down the cup and turn to watch him like he was a live bomb about to detonate at any time. That or a poisonous bug she was about to squash.

Ignoring the girl's question at first, Shadow orders a hot chocolate from the watress. Then, he slowly turns his head to the look at the girl. She had pink hair and wore black and purple. Definitely different and she was, he hated to admit it, somewhat attractive. But he could't say that. That would be really awkward. I mean, he just met this girl. And you kind of just don't out and say that to a girl usually. So, he replied, "Are you always this nice to new people, or am I just special? I'm Shadow, in case you're wondering."

"Actually, I wasn't wondering at all. And don't flatter yourself, honey, you're nothing special." Jinx reverted back to looking straight ahead and pretty much ignoring him, paying more attention to her hot chocolate than anything else, sipping meditatively with glazed eyes. She was aware she was being very rude, but come on, since when was Jinx ever very polite? And besides, she felt even less nice than usual right now. Not out right arguementative or looking to pick a fight, but definetely not looking to make a new friend with some boy she didn't know.
The silence stretched on again, which annoyed Jinx. She was just fine with ignoring him, but talking (usually sarcastic or mean) was more of what she preferred, and this silent bloke next to her made her downright fidgety. He had a sort of apathetic look to him, which didn't matter to Jinx--if he didn't care, neither did she. Okay, not completely accurate, but he didn't have to know that, now did he? She could see from her peripheral vision that he was definetely at least her age, pretty rough-looking, like maybe he was spending some quality time on the streets like she herself was. Not that Jinx was smelly hobo-ish or anything. If she wanted something, she got it. It was just kind of hard to steal a house, and not many people fit the description for a roommate. Either they didn't like her and her habits, or she couldn't stand them for one reason or another. But oh well, no one could really tell--Jinx still had enough pride in her to look her best when she set out every day.

The silence strectched on and on. Shadow sipped from his hot chocolate, burned his tongue, and set it back down. This girl, whoever she was, was definitely was different. And judging by her attitude and her unique appearance, she was the street type of girl if you know what that means.
Finally, the silence got boring. He turned to her once again and said to her "So how long you been on the streets anyway?" He turned away again and sipped at his hot chocolate, hoping his hunch was right. This would be interesting if it was. But think again, you never know what to expect from people on the streets.

The silence went on so long that Jinx almost forgot that the boy, Shadow was next to her.So when he spoke again, it took effort to drag herself back from whatever thought she was currently entertaining. She stiffened a bit at his words, but Jinx wasn't really one for bullshit, and she saw nothing this boy could gain from her admitting it, so why deny it? "I could say none of your business, you know. But in the interest of conversation, about six weeks." Jesus, had it really only been that short of an amount of time? Such a short time since her life had been flipped on its head. Again. Six short weeks since she'd lost all faith in anything. Again. Sigh. Life was cruel.
It occured to Jinx that he hadn't asked for her name, but instead had skipped that in interest of more personal questions. For some reason that irked her, but then again, when Jinx was in moods like this, a lot of things irked her. "The name's Jinx." She said over the rim of her styrofoam cup, finally turning her head to look at him, studying him with curiously colored pink irises.

"I've been on bout the same amount of time, Jinx. Jinx, no thats a name I haven't heard before." Shadow sloshes around the now cold drink in his cup. So shes been on the streets too, he thought to himself. Who knows, maybe he will be able to relate to her. "Myself, I've gotten to the point where I've had to start stealing. Now everybody sees me as the bad guy, but I'm just trying to survive. You know what thats like?" Shadow said. He took a sip from his drink and thought to himself, did I just open up to a girl he didn't know?

Okay, so maybe this kid wasn't a total tool. She didn't feel like being social, but then he surprised her by just completely outing himself as a thief. Either he was a complete fucking moron, or he really trusted her. Jinx, being the delightful pessimist she was, felt like leaning towards option A. But then again, he said it so sincerely, and looked at her like he sincerely wanted to hear what she had to say...It was something she didn't experience much. It was unbelievably nice, and it kind of cracked her up how he was just talking like they were having a conversation about the weather while he was pouring his soul out to her. So, staring straight ahead, she sipped her hot chocolate before turning to look at him, smiling over her cup. "Yeah, I do know. I know exactly how that goes." She laughed softly before deciding, what the hell, she'd tell him her story, see how he reacted. "My powers of bad luck were not quite appreciated by my mum, so she sent me off to an academy for budding villians. Left the academy, got a team together, met a boy, left the team, lost the boy, and am now shit outta luck. Isn't it funny how things turn out?" She chuckled without humor, sipping from her cup and turning to him, eyes sparkling. Not with tears or mischief or anything, just the thought of getting a commeraderie with someone who knew what she meant. Wow, she really was bipolar--hadn't she just a few minutes ago been annoyed with this kid and wishing he would leave? Now she'd just conveyed, in one sentence, her entire life thus far. Wow.
"People make the mistake that because we steal we're bad. Its self-sustaining. It wasn't always for me, I can admit, but now it most certainly is. And the funny thing? People still know me as the leader of the HIVE Five, and judge me based on that. Its annoying." She laughed bitterly. "Okay, shutting up now." What had come over her?! Suddenly she was pouring her heart out to some random boy? Jesus Christ she was losing it! And at a rapid rate too, it would appear.

Listening to her story, Shadow knew instantly what she was talking about. She had had some bad times througn in her life and had some bad times on the streets, just like he has had since he left the Mafia and returned. He figured since she was so willing to share her story with him, he sould return the favor.
"Myself, I was an oprhan adopted by a Mafia boss before becoming a hitman. I used my powers of controlling The Darkness to accomplish my jobs. Eventually I left and he killed my best friend. I then blow up myself and his whole gang and went to hell. Somehow I returned alive and, well, here I am, telling you my life story" Shadow says to her and waits for her response.

Whoa. Okay, so he had a story to rival hers. But then again, had she really expected any less? She hadn't been asking him "hey one-up me on a life story"--she could tell by his demeanor (it was very similar to what her own probably was) that he had a story intricate and dark and not safe for children's ears. And boy had she been right! But when she spoke, it was like they were talking about something completely mainstream, even joking a bit with him. "Wow, hell huh. What's it like? Betcha its cold, not hot at all. Hate the cold." She smiled weakly, clutching at her hot chocolate as if to stave off the cold she was presumably imagining seeping out of the cracks between the tiles of the diner floor beneath their feet.
"So the mafia, hm? What brought you all the way to Jump City? I mean, its not especially anything special. Though, now that I think about it, maybe all heros (and villians, haha) are probably just drawn here by a giant imaginary magnet." She smiled at the image, shrugging lightly. Okay, so her mood was getting lifted significantly. If Jinx was one to thank people (which she wasn't, duh, stealing and thanking didn't usually go hand in hand), she'd thank him for that. But as it was, Jinx had a heck of a hard time with small talk. Insulting banter was more her style, though the situation hardly called for any of that.

"Myself, I just wanted a place that I would get me away from New York and I heard this place had a lot of action with all the heros, villains, and a giant magnet so I just had to come" Shadow said, joking a bit towards the end. This was definitely not what he saw himself doing today. Talking to a random girl from the streets, who turned out to be pretty interesting herself. He was supposed to go to Titans tower, but he wasn't going to tell her that. She was the only person would talk to him in the city, and he didn't want to ruin it if she was a villain.

"Pssh, I knew it! Everyone's drawn to the giant magnet. Its our proudest landmark." She joked easily, leaning back in the booth and grinning. Wow, she hadn't felt this at ease with someone she'd just met in a while. Wasn't that funny? She didn't even know the kid at all, yet she was relaxing and being all cool and jokey. Wow. This was surprising even her, but hey, she'd go with it, she was a big fan of improvising, making it up as she went. That was what she had to do with most of her insulting banter, anyhow, and it all turned out pretty good, right? Same principle here, just flip-flopped to bring smiles.
She was acting almost like...wow, this kind of surprised her a bit...almost like they were easy friends. Friends? Hm...that was something she hadn't had the luxury of having in a while. Well, except for Wind Rider, but Jinxy had no fucking idea what he was. Probably not a friend. Love interest? Ally? Whatever, it confused her just to think about it. She'd had allies, her team, then she'd met Wally. Loss of teammates/friends, new tentative friends via the Titans (some hadn't trusted her, even thogh she'd genuinely been trying her best to be good, stupid stuck up pricks), then Wally had left and she'd lost it all, slipped back into the black and lost even those fickle acquaintances. And....now? Well, now Jinx had no idea what she was. Bad? Certainly not good, but the teensy optimistic part of her liked to think she wasn't simply "bad". Surely there was a gray area somewhere in there? Surely circumstances came into account when they were passing out labels? ('Fraid not, kiddo. Shut up voice, even if you're right.) Surely wanting to be good meant something? Well, okay, apparently it didn't or she wouldn't be completely and one hundred percent alone. No, scratch that. With Wind Rider (and maybe Shadow) she was down to about ninety-five percent lonely...Oh. Lovely. At least its a start...right?

Shadow laughed a little at the joke she made. It was something he hadn't done in a long time; laughing. It was nice to already meet a decent person in Jump City, especially a girl. Don't get too far ahead of yourself, the voice in his mind tells him. But it was nice to have a friend in this new place. In his life before this, he lost all his friends to the Mafia and was an emotionless person. But everything had changed now for the better, by meeting one person.
"Ya know Jinx, you're the first decent person I've met in a while and ya didn't have to be but you did" Shadow says to her. He really meant it and was thankful to her for being that person. After all, not everybody would. And he wanted to be nice to her. "You want to do something after this? Ya know like together?" Shadow said. He knew it sounded awkward, but hell he didn't care.

Decent? Wow. That was not a word Jinx heard used to describe her, like, ever. Maybe compared to the mafia.... So she told him so. Laughing darkly, "Decent? Hun, you must not be a good judge of character. I'm as bad as they come." But her warm smile as she put her hands behind her head and relaxing, turning her head to watch him with an easy look. It was a nice compliment, if not an unexpected one. Very unexpected. But pleasant. It almost made her want to blush a little bit, but that wouldn't do--they were in a brightly lit diner, he'd totally see the pink spread over her pale face.
And then he was asking her to hang out. Great googley moogley, he was seriously asking to hang out with her! That was another thing Jinx hadn't had happen in a while, excluding Wind Rider. Hm...it really didn't take much thought on her part: continue being a little emo loner or spend some time with an interesting kid who didn't seem too bad? "Sure! Not like I have anything else to do." She grinned.
