In fact, Robin and Raven’s relationship is undoubtedly the most complex of the Teen Titans and one that hardly anyone understands.
When they first met, Robin had no idea who she was or where she came from; however, what he did know was that she was different and that she knew it also. It was her, after all, that told him fighting wasn’t the answer to beating the strange alien girl. Even though he was considered stubborn he found himself listening to her and doing as she said. Afterwards, Robin noticed Raven hanging far back from the group, not willing to follow them in an attempt to stop the alien invasion. Confused, Robin found himself asking her if she was coming only to receive a very solemn answer from the other girl.
“I'm not the hero type. Trust me. If you knew what I really am...you wouldn't want me around.”
Nonsense. In Robin’s opinion she was a hero and a friend – he didn’t care about her past, honestly. He knew she was a good person by heart and had faith in Raven despite them just meeting. As the words left Raven’s lips, he stepped forward and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and smiled faintly.
“I know enough.”
Those three words were the start of something between these two: Raven had smiled and so had Robin, both realizing they could trust each other without judging one another. Ever since then Robin has been very respectful and protective of Raven. He didn’t judge her, he didn’t need to, and he didn’t call her names like ‘freak’ and ‘weird’. In fact, he sat back and let her go about her own business. He understood her probably more then any other Titan ever could even if they hardly communicated. Robin liked privacy and could tell she did also….and so he gave it to her and left her alone when she was reading in her room or making tea. In fact, if they were in the same room only silence would happen as Raven would flip through a book and Robin would do the same to a case file – a cup of tea in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
When a new enemy called Dr. Light suddenly appeared something changed within Raven that Robin noticed. Raven had lost control of her anger during the fight and had changed into something completely different – something that even caused Robin to stare at in shock. Putting two and two together and determining that Raven’s anger was causing this display he quickly rushed forward while the other Titans stood frozen as Raven assaulted Dr. Light. With a simple cry for her to stop, Raven had returned to normal and after a few minutes of showing her rage at Beast Boy she vanished back to the tower. Robin didn’t say anything – rather, there was nothing he could say, anyways. It wasn’t his business and he realized right there and then that something personal was wrong with her and she just needed time to herself.
The next morning all hell broke loose during breakfast. Beast Boy had remarked to Raven about her torture of Dr. Light and in return she ended up making the plate of food fly all over him. Robin watched from a safe distance and as Raven exited and shook his head slowly.
“Then how are we supposed to deal with her? How can we even trust her? I mean-“
“She’s our friend. What more do we need to know?”
In Robin’s eyes Raven didn’t need to be judged for something like this. To him, Raven was one of the strongest members on the team, and he wasn’t about to not trust or question her abilities because he didn’t need to….Raven was his friend and she would always be his friend no matter what she did. He gave her the space and privacy she needed and she returned the favor; however, the other titans didn’t seem to realize this as Robin found himself countless times telling them to leave her alone or trying to fight his way from Starfire as she would drag him there.
Of course, thing weren’t always that great between them. Slade had shown up and Robin found himself obsessing over him even going as far as making a new identity for himself—Red X. He lied, he schemed, he cheated, he betrayed – you name it, he did it. He didn’t tell anyone about it and when he was discovered he could only remember the other titans, including Raven, scolding him and yelling at him for the incident. It was the first time Raven had showed slight anger and disappointment towards him which had caused Robin to realize how much he had hurt his team. Apologizing and showing extreme remorse for his actions, Raven and him once more resumed a happy friendship and continued about their lives.
Slade used this to his advantage. Robin had gotten close to his teammates and considered them all his friends…no, his family…and Slade destroyed it with a single button. To know his friends were in danger – to know they could die – to know that unless he served Slade they would suffer because of him…he accepted the offer to become Slade’s apprentice. Fighting his friends was something that pained Robin and he always made sure to not hurt them too much – just pulling Raven’s hood over her face and tossing her aside was enough for him. What he hadn’t expected though was for them all to show up and tell him they knew and they weren’t going to leave without him – including Raven who looked just as worried about him as the rest of them.
Nearly sacrificing his own life to save his team and delivering a giant can of ass kicking to Slade, Robin returned home and was glad to be free of the probes forever along with the titans.
As time went on, Raven and him grew closer, even if they were just talking while making tea or about a book they both had read. They both knew something was up with Terra when she arrived and they both had a hard time trusting her even after she returned as a titan. It was common for Raven to consult Robin about her worries of members and it was also common for Robin to share his thoughts on them also. He finds that he can talk to Raven easier then most, even Starfire, simply because she understood him and he understood her.
However, even after Slade died at the hands of Terra, Robin was haunted by not knowing if he was dead or alive. he spent days going through documents, surveying the Slade mask, weapons – everything. When Slade showed up and began fighting Robin – beating him worse then he had before, Robin knew that he had been right. Yet, Slade was able to keep hidden from his friends and Robin soon found himself hunting for the other on his own. When he friends interfered he threatened to take them all down and pointed his birdarang at them all menacingly. Starfire, though, knocked him out and Raven had leaned over him with the other titans worriedly. When he awoke in the Tower, Slade had appeared again and Robin rushed to fight him,
Something, unusual happened though. Robin heard Raven’s voice calling for him and hard turned in time to find himself becoming one with the black shadowy mass that absorbed into his body. He was terrified by this experience and also the prospect of the other being hurt – what was worse was that mental images were running through his head from Raven’s intrusion into his mind…images he had locked away were now coming back. Raven’s voice calmed him and he allowed her to take over his body and mind only to have her be ripped away from him suddenly by a jarring blow to the face. Even though she was no longer there, he could feel her every thought and gesture. He could hear Raven telling the other titans that ‘he’s not going to make it’ and it was enough to send Robin in a small panic as he begged for Slade to stop. Eventually, he realized that Raven and the others were right and got rid of his ‘haunting’ forever with a flick of a light switch.
Afterwards, things changed even more between them, Robin had no idea why he had begun feeling things about Raven and without even having to ask her she set him down and explained it. Raven had seen everything, she knew everything about him, and now they shared a bond that none of the other titans possessed. Her soul and his were now intertwined. Surprisingly, Robin was fine with it, and soon confessed to her about his family past since she had seen the fleeting images of them. He trusted her and he was going to tell her everything….something he had never done before. Even though Raven already knew, she still listened to him and offered him a comforting hand squeeze as he talked about his parents.
Safety and trust: Raven offered him it and he, in turn, gave her friendship and understanding.
When Slade appeared on Raven’s sixteenth birthday, Robin sensed something was terribly wrong. As Raven froze time and carried him off in an effort to fight Slade he realized he couldn’t feel her mind or soul – Raven had completely blocked him out. Worried and confused as the day ended and Slade vanished he knew there was something worse supposed to happen instead of this.
Raven soon told him and the team about the prophecy –which, not long after, soon came to pass. Not wanting to give up and let Raven suffer, Robin kept trying to fight and protect her only to realize it was in vain as Trigon appeared. ‘Be Safe’, Robin swore he heard Raven say that and blessed with the shard of her power he tried his best to find the girl. When Slade came and told him where Raven was Robin completely shoved his anger towards Slade aside and embarked into hell so he could rescue his beloved friend. When he found her though she was different and didn’t remember him – it hurt him, actually, but he pushed it aside and coaxed her to join him. When they reached the surface, Robin put Raven somewhere safe and encouraged the team to keep going – leaving Raven watching in awe as Robin kept his hope up despite the futile efforts made.
It was only when Robin was knocked to the ground unconscious that Raven stepped into action. Robin had believed in her, gave her hope, and stood by her side through everything….and using this she was able to defeat Trigon and set the world back to normal. Robin had stood there afterwards and gave her a proud smile only to find himself being hugged tightly by her. The bond they shared expressed the gratitude from Raven and the happiness from Robin – no words needed to be spoken and he hugged her back without a second thought as if telling Raven that he was proud of her.
Robin doesn’t believe he did much to help Raven defeat Trigon – despite what the other girl remarks. To him, Raven is the one who set her mind to it and accomplished something she had been dreading for a long time. Raven, to him, was the true hero of the story and he was merely just a pawn that had given her a small ‘push’ to get her there. He didn’t mind it, either, Raven was back to normal…she was safe….she was happy….and she knew that he believed in her.
It wasn’t surprising that they grew closer after this and were able to talk more freely to another. The bond between them seemed to strengthen each day; however, since Slade is back Robin has found himself now dealing with Raven’s worries about him and despite how much she tries to hide it from him he can still feel the tiny icy sensation in the front of his brain. Now, for Raven, Robin has decided to try and set limits and talk more about Slade to her in small attempts to show her that he won’t become a bad guy again.
Robin cares for Raven deeply and even though they share a bond he still gives her the privacy she wants and doesn’t question her when the other titans do. Raven was different, so was he, and she is one of the best things he could ever imagine happening to him. As long as she was safe and happy then he was happy also…if anything would ever happen to her he wouldn’t ever forgive himself for it. Raven was closer to him then Bruce could ever be….in fact, it was like he’s known her all his life. He wouldn’t change their relationship for anything in the world.
Besides, she thinks his mask looks cool.Raven says:Birds of a feather flock together.
Yeah, right.
It would seem there's some truth to that—if you're into cheesy, cliché one-liners that are total bull—when it comes to Robin and Raven's relationship, however.
They both have their secrets, their dark pasts that they try to rid themselves of and protect others from… and it is perhaps for that reason alone—their shared pain, their difficulties trusting others and opening up—that Raven considers her team leader her closest confidant.
He is the only one, she feels, that has truly understood her on some level since the beginning.
The only one who has always respected her wishes.
The only one who has never been afraid of her… or for her.
The only one who has never shunned her or thought her creepy or strange or a freak.
Certainly, the other Titans came to understand her, in time; with them, she went through a few rough patches but ultimately came to connect with them, as they did with her. The difference is that Robin never had to go through any trials to see her for what she was. He was the first person she trusted after coming to Earth… her first ‘best friend,’ as it were: when she first lost control of her anger and her powers in a fight with Dr. Light, he was the only one who could calm her down and make her snap out of it.
Still, things between them haven’t always been easy. The Red X incident upset her as much it had her fellow Titans—it was the first time they all truly saw just how deep his obsession with Slade and his desire to uncover who he was (and, perhaps, to defeat him once and for all) ran. It was unsettling, to know what lengths he would go to just to beat Slade; to know that he would lie and scheme and betray his friends… that he could sink to the same level as one of their most notorious enemies, if things came to it, in an attempt to get even.
He seemed to realize once it was all over, however, what a huge mistake it had been to create Red X; and just like her friends, her trust in him was restored—by how true his remorse and regret over the whole affair appeared to be.
Unfortunately, Red X wasn’t the end of it. Within that same year things regarding Slade and the Boy Wonder’s obsession with him came to a head once again. He had become Slade’s apprentice… and none of the Titans, including her, knew what to think. When the truth was finally revealed, however, she and their teammates were prepared to risk their lives for their team leader—and he did the same in return. After Slade’s ass was collaboratively kicked and their faith in their leader was restored once again, things quieted down.
But Slade remained the neverending source of the Boy Wonder’s problems, even after his death at the hands of Terra—and they came dangerously close to losing Robin yet again. When he believed Slade to still be alive and in the Tower and left the Titans trapped in the infirmary to go chase after him, Raven used her soul-self to find him and share, however briefly, his soul and mind.
Because doing so required a certain lack of control—and likely also because he wasn’t prepared for it, either—she was unable to keep from infringing upon his privacy… and seeing his darkest memories, his best-kept secret. With this fleeting mental and metaphysical connection also came the creation of the Bond; while she oft put a little bit of her soul into an object to use it with her powers, she had never done so with another living being… and they ended up being connected. He had a part of her, and she had a part of him—for better or for worse. Their bond has always kept them connected—because of it, Raven has to work more than usual to keep from inadvertently hearing his thoughts and feeling his emotions. She doesn’t like to begrudge him his privacy, if she can help it—if only because she knows how much she would hate it if it happened to her—and the bond only makes keeping this up all the more difficult, but… at the same time, she feels it is what makes her closer to him than she has been to anyone else before.
They both had hoarded their secrets over the years, but their bond eradicated his barriers; and the passage of time eradicated hers.
When her sixteenth birthday came and she froze time in an attempt to get away from Slade, Robin was the one she chose to help her fight him off. He saved her more than once during that fateful day, but she still refused to let him in her mind—she allowed him to believe that the prophecy was nothing worse than the attack of Slade. Not because she didn’t trust him… but because she trusted him too much.
For once in her life, she wasn’t alone—and that was exactly the problem.
In due time, however, she was forced to tell him and the rest of her friends the truth of the prophecy—and it wasn’t long after that the prophecy in question came to pass. They tried to prepare for it, tried to fight for her… but for the sake of her friends’ survival, she followed through with what her father wanted—but not before gifting each of her friends with shards of her power, in order to keep them safe. She, too, survived… to an extent, and armed with this knowledge he traveled through Hell with his worst enemy to save her.
It was largely due to him that Trigon was defeated, though it was by her hand that her father was banished; he alone convinced her again to hope… and he believed in her all along, more than she ever could in herself. Raven is eternally grateful for all that he did for her then, and for all that he does for her and their team now. Robin is the one she goes to when she cannot go to anyone else; he seems to understand, better than anyone, why she is the way she is. Truthfully, she worries deep down when his obsessive tendencies make themselves known or when he toes the line between ‘good’ and ‘evil’—but she remains careful to position herself as an available friend whenever he needs her, unwilling to pry or force her help on him unless it’s truly necessary. Above all else, she cares for him deeply.
Besides—his mask makes her feel cool.

The cliché one-lined statement does describe Robin and Raven’s relationship; however, there are more to these two then just sharing some common interests and ‘bird names’.
Besides, she thinks his mask looks cool.
Raven says:
Birds of a feather flock together.
It was unsettling, to know what lengths he would go to just to beat Slade; to know that he would lie and scheme and betray his friends… that he could sink to the same level as one of their most notorious enemies, if things came to it, in an attempt to .
